Shillingstone Station was constructed in 1863 by the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway to a Dorset Central Railway (DCR) specification. It remains the only surviving example of a building built to this distinctive DCR design.

In the early years of the 20th century the station was extended with a new Station Master’s office. In 1899, the elegant canopy was added in anticipation of a visit by the future King Edward VII. Just five years later, in 1904, King George V and Queen Mary concluded a royal railway journey at Shillingstone.

Closed in 1966 and later abandoned, the historic building fell into disrepair before being rescued in 2005 by a dedicated team of volunteers. Lovingly restored, it now forms the heart of the North Dorset Railway.
